EDU 307 Read Task Literature and Read Alouds

“Teachers conduct read-alouds to motivate their students to read and to build their topical knowledge about a specific subject”. I liked this piece of information from the reading because it shows how important read alouds can be. Literature and read alouds are important in a child’s learning. It can engage and motivate their students to participate within the classroom setting. Students knowledge can significantly grow from literature and read alouds.

EDU 305 Stages of Reading Write Task

Stages of reading and practices can show how literacy practices can develop skills in reading and writing to accomplish tasks. Offering different perspectives on literacy can present background knowledge to socio-cultural views. Literacy learning is determined by social and cultural interactions, tools, and techniques. Stages of reading and literacy occurs within a wide range of interaction and learning. Individuals grow into readers through thorough practice, persistence, and interactions with one another. People can grow into readers through practice and exposure to literacy experiences. There are stages that can be used as a guide to develop reading skills. The stages of reading can start with Stage 0 which is the prereading category. This consists of birth to age 6. This is where children are deeply exposed to a literate culture and can gain the most knowledge around them. Their knowledge about language, words, and books can develop. Stage 1 is the initial reading stage where students learn the arbitrary set of letters and associating them with spoken words. Stage 2 is confirmation, fluency, and ungluing from print. In this category, reading is not for gaining new information. It confirms what is already known to the reader. Stage 3 is reading for learning the new. The course of reading is practice to gain new knowledge, information, and thoughts. Stage 4 is multiple viewpoints. In this reading stage, reading is done to understand more than one point of view. In stage 5, it is focused on construction and reconstruction. Individuals in this stage learn to read books and articles for detail and completeness. Readers are able to use selectively the printed material in areas of knowledge that is the concentration for their concern.

EDU 307 Read Task Workshop Methods

A quote that struck me was “one wonders if the way classrooms are organized and run has something to do with the neutral emotional tone we observed in many of them. Whether we looked at how teachers related to students or how students related to teachers, the overwhelming impression was one of affective neutrality-a relationship neither abrasive nor joyous”. This emphasizes how teachers need to alter their approach to reading workshop instruction. They need to change the way the organization of the workshop is formed. I believe these alterations can determine the overall outcome of reading instruction for children and the effectiveness in the process.

A quote that stuck out to me was “a practice consists of three components: technology, knowledge, and skills …. Whether defined in broad or narrow terms, practice always refers to socially developed and patterned ways of using technology and knowledge to accomplish tasks”. I like this because it shows the importance of practicing. When children have more exposure to literacy, they are able to practice more. They can develop in the process of their stages of reading.

EDU 307 Book Review Literacies and Worldviews Participate Task

After reading the book “Maybe Something Beautiful” by Rafael Lopez with my book club, I really enjoyed the reading experience. I enjoyed this book because as a children’s book, it portrayed creative illustrations. This would draw the students attention to be intrigued to reading the book. The pictures were colorful that added to the book’s overall message. The sharing of the paint brush in the book spread color throughout the streets in the story. In addition, I liked this aspect of the book because it showed a copious amount of colors in the story. For a child, this can emphasize the idea of sharing, which is important to a child’s development.

The book showcases a central message depicting how art can transform a neighborhood. This created a sense of community and unity within the book. As the main character displays her art, others begin to join in. Somber colored buildings begin to be replaced with electric and vibrant colors. The vibrant colors that pour onto the page create an overall theme that is carried throughout the entire story. The take away message that my book club received from reading this book was an uplifting message about the power of art that can revitalize people and their community.

EDU 305 Write Task Concepts of Print

Literacy and literature has evolved into a multimodal concept. It can be utilized through technology, tablets, and digital tools. These constant evolutionary practices need to be implemented in order to encompass new digital reading practices. By reading on a tablet, it can engage the child into interactive text. A set of conventions is revealed through touchscreen technology for interactive modes such as speech, image, and touch. I believe the concepts of print is a useful assessment. It creates a distinct layout for print and it helps the child understand how to read literature. The assessment is a technique that demonstrates how a child looks at, reads, and understands how a book works. It creates a concept of knowing how books and print work collaboratively. It could include how to identify the title, author, illustrator, table of contents, first word of a sentence, how to open a book, and etc. The concepts about print assessment develops how print can carry meaning. This assessment allows for teachers to grasp a deeper understanding of what aspects of print their students are aware of. It is important that through this assessment, teachers can create print conventions through experiences in writing and reading. It is beneficial in a classroom to acknowledge the varying experiences that each child has endured with print. Through this awareness, teachers can construct strategy groups for guided instruction to practice with print. This could range from practicing how to recognize punctuation, pointing to words, or reading across a line of print in a text. This is why I believe the concepts about print is a useful assessment. A key goal regarding the concepts about print is developing an understanding of how letters come together to form words which can then form sounds coherently. The concepts of print assessment can showcase each child’s level of understanding and can act as a guide for teachers to develop teaching strategies to further their student’s knowledge of how print works.
